The Hidden Cost of Clutter

Let’s be honest; none of us are perfect. We are all guilty of buying that novelty souvenir while on holiday or holding onto a trinket or two that we don’t really like but feel reluctant to throw away just because we’ve had it for a long time. Not to mention the things that simply don’t get tidied away at the end of a long and stressful day because all you want to do is relax.

We think ‘what’s the harm?,’ ‘it’s just stuff.’

But clutter can have a significant impact on so many aspects of our lives whether we realise it or not.

Research by RACGP has shown that disorganisation and clutter effects our brains in a very real way. On a subconscious level our brains gravitate towards order. When our immediate environment is in disarray our cognitive resources become drained. This can lead to a constant low-grade fight or flight response, putting excess pressure on mental resources that are designed for survival. This response can trigger physical and physiological changes that can negatively affect our health.

It’s not unusual to hear people say that tidying up is simply not a priority as they believe it won’t make a difference in their day-to-day life, but that’s not necessarily the case.

Decluttering promotes relaxation, reducing anxiety and tension.

Crowded surroundings often mean a crowded mind. An organised space can help you achieve mental clarity.

In a more organised environment you may become more efficient, improving the effectiveness of your daily routines.
